Surrounded by the stench of poverty and drunkards in the city, a law student commits two brutal murders. As his conscience begins to get the better of him, he is confronted by the suspicions of a playful examining magistrate and the redemptive love of a downtrodden prostitute. But will Raskolnikov face his punishment?
